ICT and environmental sustainability: A global perspective
Dolores Añón Higón, Roya Gholami, FaridShirazi
The empirical results of this study showed that ICT could positively contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions once a threshold level of ICT development has been achieved. Both for the samples of developed and developing countries, as well as for the total sample, we find that the relationship between ICT and CO2 emissions has an inverted U-shape form.

ICT has a dual role: as an enabler of change it can support changes to societal behaviour which can reduce the environmental impact of life, housing, work and leisure activities, but as a significant user of resources, it is a contributor to the adverse effects.
